A study of starvation ketosis in the ruminant.

چکیده
There is a theory of long standing that post-parturient dyspepsia of cattle, or bovine ketosis as it is often called, is caused by an inadequate calorie intake; the same has also been suggested of the condition known as pregnancy toxaemia in ewes. It was felt, therefore, that it might be of value to make a detailed study of starvation ketosis in those animals, especially as earlier experiments appear to have yielded rather conflicting results. Thus Sjollema & Van der Zande (1923), who carried out one of the earliest experiments on starvation ketosis, came to the conclusion that the cow does not readily produce much acetone unless in certain diseased conditions. Similarly Carpenter (1927) concluded that the ruminant was quite resistant to starvation ketosis. However, Forbes (1943) claimed to find a rise in blood ketone bodies in lactating cows kept on submaintenance diets for considerable periods, and both Carlstrom (1950) and Holmes (1950) noted a marked urinary excretion of ketone bodies by cows starved postpartum. Similarly, Sampson & Boley (1940) and Clark, Groenewald & Malan (1943) produced a starvation ketosis in ewes in late pregnancy, and the latter workers succeeded, by prolonged feeding of inadequate rations, in producing it also in non-pregnant sheep. Few workers, however, have made any really detailed biochemical study of the ketosis observed, and we decided, therefore, to apply to this problem the methods for determining ketone bodies already elaborated by us (Thin & Robertson, 1952).

Effects of starvation on intermediary metabolism in the lactating cow. A comparison with metabolic changes occurring during bovine ketosis.
1. The purpose of this study was to determine the nature of the metabolic changes associated with carbohydrate and fat metabolism that occurred in the blood and liver of lactating dairy cows during starvation for 6 days. 2. During starvation, the blood concentrations of the free fatty acids and ketone bodies increased, whereas that of citrate decreased. After an initial increase, the blood conc...
متن کاملAspects of ruminant intermediary metabolism in relation to ketosis.
Both the cow and the sheep are susceptible to ketosis. In the cow the clinical condition is termed primary spontaneous bovine ketosis and in the sheep, pregnancy toxaemia. Bovine ketosis occurs typically in the third to eighth week of lactation in mature heavily lactating diary cows. Pregnancy toxaemia occufs in late pregnancy in ewes bearing two or more lambs. Both conditions are associated wi...
متن کاملEvaluation of Total Antioxidant, Total Calcium, Selenium, Insulin, Free Triiodothyronine and Free Thyroxine Levels in Cows with Ketosis
Ketosis is an important metabolic disease of high milk-producing cows. There are significant changes in many metabolite and hormonal concentrations in metabolic diseases. This study was carried out to assess the concentrations calcium (Ca), selenium (Se), total antioxidant (TAOC), insulin, free triiodothyronine (fT3) and free thyroxine (fT4) in cows with subclinical and clinical ketosis. This s...
متن کاملA novel chemical method for measuring ketone bodies in subclinical ketosis
Backgrounds: Subclinical ketosis can cause greater economic loss due to a lack of clinical symptoms. Objectives: The present study was aimed to design a chemical method for measuring serum ketone bodies in the affected subclinical cows. Methods: Acetoacetate concentrations were measured using a nitroprusside reaction and b-hydroxy butyric acid (BHBA) which was oxidized to acetoacetate using nan...

The present study was performed to determine the effect of short periods of starvation and re-feeding on liver index and thyroid hormones levels in Huso huso. 180 juveniles with an average initial weight of 34.58 ± 5.32 gr, treated in4 groups consisting of the control treatment (F) was fed 4 times daily to the extent of apparent satiety, SRF1 treatment with four alternating periods of two days ...
